The situation

Located along Gouin Boulevard, not far from the Rivière des Prairies in Montreal, St. Joseph Park offers one of the largest and most innovative inclusive playgrounds in Quebec. To create a park that would be accessible to all: this is the mission that Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles (RDP-PAT) has given itself.

Access to the park, the sanitary facilities and all the play modules had to be totally accessible to all, adults and children, with or without functional limitations of all kinds.

 

The challenge for Urben Blu

To meet the various accessibility needs of all, our intelligent, self-cleaning and vandal-proof toilets were the solution they were looking for, but there were still certain functionalities that needed to be adapted for their needs.

We suggested a “dual toilet” model with smart features, meaning that it cleans itself after a user passes through (both the floor and the toilet), and includes two universally accessible toilets, one of which is large enough to accommodate a person in a wheelchair and their attendant and includes an adult changing table, which is extremely rare for a park facility. A water fountain was added to meet the needs.

The personalization and the choice of exterior materials was made by the project managers, in order to integrate well with the design of the park in general.

 

Result

Since its creation, St. Joseph Park has established itself as a true reference in terms of accessible facilities. Many municipalities have approached the borough to learn more about the various stages of the project.

Urben Blu is extremely proud to be part of this success story and the result meets the expectations of citizens very well.

Nadine Bergeron, foreman of horticulture and parks at the City of Montreal (RDP-PAT), comments with a touch of humor, one way to know if the project is a success with citizens: “We have not had any complaints from citizens so far, so it’s a very good sign for us. We are very satisfied with the result!”

At the same time, Ms. Bergeron took the opportunity to praise the quality of Urben Blu after-sales service, which she described as “very good” since the installation in April 2021.
